Ilene Satala
July 13, 1951 – May 16, 2014
Ilene Satala was a beloved teacher, artist, mentor and friend. Her life’s work and teaching resonated with me from the first time I attended her art class in 1994. Through the years, her patience, unconditional acceptance, and investment in me allowed me to explore and manifest the healing power of leading a creative life.
Ilene’s extensive body of artwork focuses heavily on cross-cultural images of the Sacred Feminine throughout time. She had a passionate interest in mythology, archeology, psychology, and anthropology. From the age of nine, she fully immersed herself in the studies of Egyptian, Greek and other world cultures – always seeking and unearthing the feminine images and teachings to guide her own life as well as that of her students.
This passion led her to Frida Kahlo. Ilene felt fiercely connected to Frida’s willingness to bare her soul in her art, infusing her own pain and joy and truth into each piece so that it could be vividly felt by the viewer. This early, intense connection to Frida so directly guided Ilene throughout her creative life that it felt only right to partner these two powerful female artists in one sacred altar. In her adult life, Ilene traveled extensively throughout Mexico and Central America, studying both the ancient and modern Maya. In 2008, she was initiated by the Tz’utujiil Maya of Santiago Atitlan Guatemala and was made a shaman. Ilene felt this honor was given to her for her commitment to the Sacred Feminine and her work as an artist exploring the unseen world of creativity and healing. That same year, Ilene co-created an award-winning book for young women called Sophia and the Seven Goddesses. In this book, she developed a story for young girls to find a new identity based on inner strength and self-acceptance.
My original papercutting artwork honors Ilene and her sacred connection to the feminine and Saint Frida. Ilene’s own image and signature adorns the base of the larger upper wall panel. Frida’s eyes watch over her and she is surrounded by goddess and feminine images that had meaning to her – butterflies, mermaids, Kwan Yin, Venus of Willendorf, the Virgin de Guadalupe, and even Miss Piggy (Ilene had a lively sense of humor.)
On top of the altar sits a limited-edition Frida doll that Ilene owned; a photo of Ilene meditating above the photo of her crypt in Santiago Atitlan, Guatemala; a painting of Frida by Ilene; and Frida’s diary. Photos from Ilene’s husband, Conrad, were displayed on a digital frame which is not pictured in the photo, but can be viewed here.
The lower panel of the papercutting depicts the sacred pyramids of Teotihuacán. It is believed that one of these pyramids was built upon the cave of the red spider goddess – the feminine entity who weaves and reweaves the web of life, creating and healing, to keep us connected to each other in this world and that of the unseen. Creating this work of art was a labor of love – for Ilene, for Frida, and for the creative life I now lead because of my dear mentor’s guidance and love. It has become a portal to her and the world in which she now graces. I invite you to feel that same connection, allowing the sacred power of creativity to move you in whatever means it is destined for your own soul.

Ilene Satala era una querida maestra, artista, mentor y amiga. El trabajo de su vida y enseñanzas resonaban conmigo desde la primera vez que asistí a su clase de arte en 1994. A través de los años, la paciencia, la aceptación incondicional, y la inversión en mí, me permitió explorar y manifestar el poder curativo de llevar una vida creativa.
El amplio conjunto de obras de arte de Ilene se centran en gran medida en las imágenes interculturales del Sagrado Femenino a través del tiempo. Ella tenía un apasionado interés por la mitología, arqueología, psicología y antropología. Desde la edad de nueve años, ella se sumergió completamente en los estudios de las culturas del mundo egipcios, griegos y otros – siempre buscando y desenterrando las imágenes y enseñanzas femeninas para guiar su propia vida, así como la de sus alumnos.
Esta pasión la llevó a Frida Kahlo. El panel inferior de papercutting representa las pirámides sagradas de Teotihuacán. Se cree que una de estas pirámides fue construida sobre la cueva de la diosa araña roja – la entidad femenina que teje y reteje la red de la vida, creando y sanando, para mantenernos conectados entre sí en este mundo y el del más allá. La creación de esta obra de arte fue una labor de amor – para Ilene, para Frida, y para la vida creativa que ahora llevo gracias al amor y orientación de mi querida mentora. Se ha convertido en un portal para ella y al mundo en el que ahora ella le da gracia. Yo les invito a sentir la misma conexión, permitiendo que el poder sagrado de la creatividad los lleve a los medios a los que sus propias almas están destinadas.
