Rudy and Roxy

July 19, 2011

As you can probably guess, Rudy and Roxy are my dogs. They are sweet dog friends who love to eat and love our attention even more. They are most often in this pose of attentively looking, waiting, hoping for a touch, a kiss, a soft word, a treat.

This is a re-creation (a re-cutting, actually) of my first official original paper cutting that I created at a week-long workshop at Penland School of Crafts in April 2008. We were to do a study in black and white and since I have one white dog and one black one. Voila!

Even more significant, the original of this image SOLD at the ‘show and tell’ exhibit at the end of my Penland week.   Someone I did not know saw it and liked it and wanted to take it home. It was a quick and simple transaction…I unpinned it from the wall, signed it, handed it to him, and he gave me $100 cash. Then the week was over and I hopped in my car to drive the nine hours home.

In the quiet of the car, however, the profundity of it all hit me. I had sold a creation of mine for the very first time; something I had manifested from nothing except an image of creatures I love and an intense desire to create with a new medium. To have that intensity seen by someone else was pretty doggone powerful (no pun intended) and I realized that for the first time ever,

I believed in the power of my creative forces.

The original measures 8 x 10″. Prints of the original piece and a variety of fun products including tshirts, hoodies, ipad and iphone cases can be found at Redbubble.
