This room and the garage below it was added about 50 years after the house was built. I’m totally making that time frame up. Joel isn’t home and he’s the keeper of all things historical. Let’s just go with it, OK?
I love this room. It has three large windows – newer ones which seal really nicely and open without weights and pulleys – that offer a perfect view of the tree-filled sky, rooftops, and neighbors’ yards. I probably sound a little like Mrs. Cravitz (from Bewitched…who’s with me?) when I talk about all of this, but it’s normal to scope out your neighbors when you live downtown. For instance, the first time I met Dean who lives two doors down from me I said, “Oh yes! I can see your yard from my back bedroom and I loved watching how you landscaped it last summer and your little puppy is so cute when she chases the squirrels.” He never batted an eye, but was delighted that I had noticed. And then said to come over to drink wine on the patio I’d been admiring. See, totally normal to watch your neighbors here.
Anyway, we didn’t need to do a whole lot to this room save for the basic flooring stuff, installing some ductwork, scraping the popcorn ceiling, insulating, and painting. I realize just how much we did to this house when a list of five things in one room constitutes ‘we didn’t do a whole lot’. It’s all about perspective, isn’t it?
Here are a few photos.
Before we bought the house, this room was a tad cluttered with various leftovers from the pervious owner’s tenants.
After it got cleaned out, it spent most of the summer housing the contents of the hallway bathroom so this is my most vivid memory of it.
Now it looks like this. Big sigh.
