Mary has traveled extensively in Mexico and Central America exploring the modern and ancient Mayan culture, art, and rituals. She is quoted as saying, “The Maya people have taught me to regard artwork as a spiritual experience that taps what they refer to as the unseen world. With each portrait, I have redefined myself, finding a pleasure and inspiration which constantly urges me to paint even more.”
Her beautiful, weaving women speak to that inspiration. And now I am blessed to have two of those images anchoring the spiritual, unseen world in our home.
The first is Creation for Sale. It hangs on the main wall at the top of the front staircase. Mary said she was captured by this woman’s presence as she calmly sat on a street in Guatemala. She agreed to have her picture taken for a small donation and then Mary came home and set about painting her. I remember her painting this piece when we were in art class together, meticulously placing each dot of color on her skirt and blouse. Artist and subject share the gift of patience!
The second piece, Tending the Creative Fire, captures another stroll down a back street in Guatemala. Again, permission granted to photograph, and again, spirit captured upon return home.
One other piece that is not in my home, but is equally gorgeous is Come In…I Made This. Again Mary was strolling the markets of Guatemala (she’s been there a LOT) and was beckoned into this artist’s booth. She purchased the detailed, blue pillow sham in the painting so is able to feel it, and its creator, again and again.
Mary offered another piece for our home during the 2013 West Central Home and Garden Tour. It was Dream Weaver – one of her very first paintings after an early trip to Central America.
